Ryerson University’s Creative School in Canada offers a course on globally successful rappers Drake (34, “What’s Next”) and The Weeknd (31, “Blinding Lights”). According to Ryerson Professor Dalton Higgins, who led the course, the course, titled “Deconstructing Drake and the Weekend,” will be offered in the winter semester from January 2022. “The time has come for our Canadian rap and R&B icons to be recognized and canonised, academically or otherwise,” Higgins said. “And it is important that scholars and historians examine the Toronto music scene that launched Drake/Weekend and thus laid the foundation for its mega-success.”
According to the university, this course is offered as one of the core courses for the Creative School’s Professional Music BA program, Canada’s “first transdisciplinary professional music degree”.
Drake and The Weeknd are currently among the most successful rappers in the world.
