Heavy blizzards have also caused power and flight failures across large parts of the eastern United States today. Southeastern Canada has also been affected by the storm. More than 215,000 homes in the US did not have electricity. The states of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia were the hardest hit.

According to the FlightAware website, about 1,600 flights were canceled at US airports as of noon (local time). Around 3,000 flights had already been canceled due to snowfall. Snow storm warnings have been issued for some areas of Canada, including parts of the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Many schools remained closed in Quebec and southern Ontario.

In the United States, the National Weather Service (NWS) expected a weakening to “heavy blizzard” during the day. Nevertheless, “significant impacts from snow, ice, wind and flooding on the coast” can be expected. Hurricane warnings were still in effect for eleven states. The winter storm first made landfall in the southeast and coastal areas across the country’s east on Sunday before moving into the New England states and southern Canada.
