In the United States, among other things, many 1 Series have to be returned to authorized workshops due to a known problem.

BMW of North America has to bring about a million vehicles to authorized workshops. A good 917,000 old units are affected by the measure – it was announced on Wednesday by the US traffic safety agency NHTSA. Therefore the reason for the measure is the risk of fire due to a possible short circuit.

The recall is based on a 2018 action that could not completely eliminate the problem mentioned. The Munich manufacturer confirmed this upon request on Wednesday. In a four-year-old BMW service information, the problem details related to heated crankcase ventilation – the blow-by heater installed there, intended to protect the system from freezing in sub-zero temperatures, had a fault: the heater’s electrical contacts Are plastic-coated – and due to irregularities in the manufacturing process, moisture collected near blow-by heaters can reach the contacts and eventually cause a short circuit.

Only “Coldlanders” Affected

Since the component pertains to country-specific equipment for so-called cold countries (in this case the United States, Canada and South Korea), vehicles delivered in Europe are not affected by the old or new recall in this case.

BMW had the heater replaced by its service partners in 2018 after changing the material composition of the plastic coating. However, it turned out that the differently coated contacts are still susceptible to cavitation due to the special production process. So Munich is currently developing an alternative solution to the problem.
