Mercedes-Benz auctions Uhlenhout coupe for 135 million euros

DCarmaker Mercedes-Benz just auctioned off two examples of the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe for 135 million euros, according to the company. According to Mercedes, the car, named after engineer Rudolf Uhlenhout since 1955, is the most expensive car ever built.

As the company announced Thursday in Stuttgart, the sale took place on May 5 during a campaign at the car company’s museum. The buyer is a private collector. The second copy remains with Mercedes and will continue to be on display at the museum.

According to a statement by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kelenius, the Uhlenhout coupĂ© is a “milestone in sports car development and an important historical cornerstone of our brand.” The proceeds will be used to finance a global scholarship program, the “Mercedes-Benz Fund”.
