Canada: Hurricane “Fiona” tears down homes and causes power outages
Hurricane Fiona hit Canada’s east coast with heavy rain and hurricane-force winds.

Halifax. Hurricane “Fiona” has caused damage along the east coast of Canada, with heavy rainfall and storm surges. A state of emergency has been declared in some areas. The coastal town of Port aux Basques in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador was badly affected, with many houses being torn down by high waves. Police had earlier directed residents to leave the danger zone.

Also in the province of Nova Scotia, the storm covered roofs, downed power poles and trees, and flooded streets. Nova Scotia’s Prime Minister Tim Houston spoke of the “incredible number” of fallen trees on Saturday afternoon (local time). About three quarters of the residents are without electricity. Houston said it was too early to estimate the damage.
