Berlin (dpa) – The sparrow remains Germany’s most common winter bird in the count of the Conservation of Nature Conservation Association (Nabu). According to the organizers’ announcement, more than 1.1 million house sparrows – 6.8 per garden – counted on average the participants in the “Hour of the Winter Birds”.
Accordingly, as in the previous year, the great teat and trees in the sections follow the sparrow. “On the other hand, the reported number of citrus titles was particularly low,” Nabu said. Minus is less than 20 percent as compared to last year. According to Nabu, the cause is unclear: a possible lack of flow from the north or a bacterial epidemic in the spring. In addition, conservationists are seeing a worrisome decline in green beans. It has to do with malignant protozoan infections.
The total abundance of birds was also high in previous years: with 34.5 birds per garden, the second lowest value was reached since the campaign began in 2011. The trend is decreasing for species that rely on immigration from the north and east. Population of species that remain true to their location in winter or some of which develop in a stable or developed way south from here. The shorter the winter, the less the birds avoid going in hot climates.
According to Nabbu, more people attended the second weekend than the first week in January: with more than 236,000 participants, a 65 percent increase over the previous year. The increased interest is also believed to be related to lockdown. With the greater number of participants, the campaign will be even more meaningful, it said. The purpose of bird count is to help in the development of the bird population in the long term.
