Drone attack apparently near Abu Dhabi airport

Attack on UAE: Apparently there have been several explosions in Abu Dhabi. One group has already claimed responsibility for the attack.

At least three people were killed and six others injured in a suspected drone strike by Houthi rebels in Yemen’s Emirati capital Abu Dhabi. Three oil tanks exploded on Monday near an industrial site and storage facilities of state-run oil company ADNOC, police said. At the same time, a fire broke out at a construction site at the international airport. According to state agency WAM, police said that both the places may have been attacked by drones.

Mohamed al-Bachiti of the Politburo of the Houthi militia spoke to Al-Jazeera, the news channel of the “military strike” in the emirate. Houthi military spokesman Jahaja Sari also spoke on Twitter about a “military operation” in the oil-rich country and announced further details.

Such attacks are rare

Shia Houthi rebels have the support of Iran. In Yemen, they are fighting a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia, which also includes the Emirate. In the south of Saudi Arabia in particular, rebels regularly attack with drones and rockets, and there have been repeated deaths and injuries in recent years. On the other hand, attacks within the Emirates are rare.

The metropolis of Abu Dhabi is located on the Persian Gulf and is the seat of the emirate’s government. With approximately 1.5 million residents, it is one of the largest cities in the country along with Dubai and Sharjah.

A video circulated on the Internet on Monday, which is said to show moments after the alleged attack. A plume of black smoke can be seen in the sky.
