2026-27 NHL Season to Open With Hurricanes-Panthers Clash, Maple Leafs to Host Canadiens on Opening Night

The NHL has unveiled key details of its 2026-27 regular-season schedule, with the campaign set to begin on Sept. 29 featuring a marquee matchup between the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers. Canadian hockey fans will also have plenty to watch on opening night, highlighted by a renewed rivalry between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens.

Hurricanes to Raise Stanley Cup Banner Against Panthers

The 2026-27 NHL season will officially begin when the Carolina Hurricanes host the Florida Panthers in Raleigh on Sept. 29. The game will feature Carolina’s Stanley Cup banner-raising ceremony following the club’s championship-winning campaign.

The matchup carries added intrigue as it pits the Hurricanes against a Panthers team that captured back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025 before Carolina claimed the title.

The season opener is part of an ESPN tripleheader. Following the Hurricanes-Panthers game, the Boston Bruins will welcome the New York Rangers before the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights host the Chicago Blackhawks.

Maple Leafs and Canadiens Headline Canadian Opening Night

Canadian audiences will be treated to a Sportsnet doubleheader on opening night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will host the Montreal Canadiens in one of hockey’s most storied rivalries. The game could also mark the NHL debut of highly touted prospect Gavin McKenna, whom Toronto selected first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Later that evening, the Edmonton Oilers will begin a new chapter under head coach Mike Babcock when they host the Vancouver Canucks, now led by head coach Manny Malhotra.

Rivalries Continue on Sept. 30

The NHL’s second day of action will feature another slate of high-profile matchups.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, led by Sidney Crosby, will visit the Philadelphia Flyers in a rematch of their 2026 Eastern Conference First Round playoff series. Philadelphia eliminated Pittsburgh in six games during that matchup.

Later that night, the Los Angeles Kings will face the Colorado Avalanche in Denver, featuring stars including Artemi Panarin and Nathan MacKinnon.

Brady Tkachuk Begins New Chapter in Florida

One of the offseason’s biggest moves will be on display early in the season.

Brady Tkachuk is expected to make his Florida Panthers debut after being acquired from the Ottawa Senators on June 21. The trade reunites him with his brother, Matthew Tkachuk, creating one of the NHL’s most notable family pairings.

Florida’s home opener on Oct. 10 will also mark Brady Tkachuk’s first game in front of Panthers fans. The Panthers will host the Minnesota Wild, featuring several of his Team USA teammates, including Quinn Hughes, Matt Boldy and Brock Faber.
