After attacking US Capitol: Trump aides fail in court

After demonstrators forcibly entered the US Capitol on January 6, more and more participants had to answer in court. Trump adviser Michael Flynn wants to take action against the active investigative committee with a lawsuit – but the application has been rejected.

Former Trump adviser Michael Flynn failed to file a lawsuit against the committee to investigate the storm at the US Capitol. A judge in the US state of Florida rejected a request by Flynn – along with a testimony before a committee of aides to former President Donald Trump – and wanted to block the provision of the requested documents. Flynn is said to have been available to answer questions from the panel, but he has so far refused to cooperate and allowed the deadline to pass.

He only served as the National Security Advisor in the White House for more than three weeks in 2017. The committee also summoned Trump aide and Republican lawmaker Jim Jordan on Wednesday. “We know that you communicated with President Trump at least once, possibly several times on January 6,” wrote committee chairman Benny Thompson. The committee wanted to “talk to him in detail” about this exchange.

Was there a coup d’état?

Reports also indicated that Jordan had information about meetings between White House officials and Trump in late 2020 and early January 2021. These were about the strategies with which the outcome of the 2020 presidential election should be reversed. The committee has already spoken to dozens of witnesses – but some of the summons refuse to cooperate. That’s why Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist, must now answer in court. The same threatens Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Supporters of the then US President stormed the US Congress on 6 January. Five people, including a policeman, died. Trump faced impeachment proceedings for the attack because he previously incited his supporters in a speech. However, he was acquitted in the end.
