Beiersdorf expands its Leipzig location

Florena producer Beiersdorf is expanding its Leipzig location. In addition to the new production plant in the north, a Europe-wide distribution center is now to be built. Beiersdorf AG announced that it would create about 400 additional jobs in Leipzig, in addition to the initial 200 jobs at the production centre. The company invests 170 million euros in addition to 220 million for the plant.

Biggest investment in one place

Beiersdorf itself speaks of the company’s largest investment in one location worldwide. It aims to make the distribution center operate in a CO₂-neutral manner. Therefore a significant proportion of goods must be transported by rail. Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Martin Duhlig (SPD), described the announcement as a strong signal for change and confidence in the times of the pandemic. However, the group does not yet have the land required for the construction. Leipzig city council has yet to vote on the sale, which must be purely a matter of form.

Traditional company sacrifices are made in Waldheim

Beiersdorf decided in early 2020 to build a new Florena plant in Leipzig-Seehausen, which should go into operation at the end of 2022. Also, it was clear that the previous location at Waldheim with 280 employees would be abandoned in a few years, at the time it was stated. Waldheim is home to the traditional cosmetics brand Florena, which has been part of the Nivea Group Beiersdorf since 2002. Florena was one of the popular brands in the GDR, but it is much older and its predecessors date back to the 19th century.
