Christian Drosten, chief virologist of the Berlin Charité, in an interview with “Tagespigel am Sonntag” criticized the lack of standards for quality control of communication between scientists and the public. “I would like to initiate a discussion within science about how such standards for science communication can be defined and made binding on scientists,” Drosten said. Scientists who falsify data will face “serious problems” – there are sanctions for such misconduct. But there is misconduct in science communication too, so far without restrictions. Drosten told Tagespiegel that it is not explicitly about censorship, but that scientists should publicly “distinguish between uncontrolled expressions of opinion and statements that claim to be based on valid scientific facts”.
