Passengers stranded in Eurotunnel for five hours

Passengers were stranded on the Eurotunnel for nearly five hours after a car train from Calais in France to the English city of Folkestone failed on Tuesday afternoon. PA News Agency has given this information.

The Eurotunnel is the longest underwater tunnel in the world. Of the 50 kilometres, 37 run entirely under the English Channel between France and Great Britain.

A video on social media showed people walking through a dark maintenance tunnel, some with luggage and dogs.

“The maintenance tunnel was terrible. It was like something out of a disaster movie,” a 37-year-old passenger told PA. “We just went into the abyss, not knowing what was happening. We all had to wait in this long line under the sea.” One woman cried, the other had a panic attack.

A replacement train, which usually carries buses, eventually takes passengers to Folkestone Terminal.

Contact was lost due to the incident. The train operator asked passengers traveling from Calais to Folkestone not to come to the terminal till Wednesday morning. According to Eurotunnel, operations returned to normal on Wednesday morning. (BW/DPA)

The passengers were eventually taken on a replacement train to Folkestone, England.
