Women’s Olympic Football: Tournament Format
The women’s football tournament begins with a group stage in which four of the twelve teams are eliminated. The remaining eight have advanced to the quarter-finals and the knockout rounds have begun.
Group Level: The 12 teams are divided into Groups E, F and G to avoid confusion with the men’s tournament Group AD. The two first-place teams in each group automatically advance to the two best-placed third-placed teams.
In a round robin group game, three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and one for a loss. Teams are ranked by points (including the best third-place finisher) goal difference in the first tiebreaker and goals scored in that order. If the teams are still tied after the other tiebreaker, there is other predetermined criteria.
Knockout Round: The best eight teams progress to the knockout rounds with fixed brackets, individual elimination, starting with the quarterfinals, to the semi-finals and finally to the medal games.
