What do you do with an old chair where the upholstery is broken and the wood is showing its age? That’s right, upcycle! Because the piece of furniture is so good that it cannot be thrown away. Together with the DIY Expert Thomas Clotzow From Berlin we show in the new series “Upholstery” how you can make completely new things out of old furniture. In the first episode, an old chair becomes a new chair garden. In the video, we show how it works!
Lift a chair – what do you need for this?
To make a chair garden, you first need an old chair. How it looks is a matter of taste – but the older models made of wood are especially beautiful. you also need:

Step-by-step instructions for chair garden
It is relatively easy to build a chair garden yourself with a little skill. Thanks for the detailed instructions, this project is also something for beginners. that’s how it works:
- First, remove the upholstery. As with many older chairs, it comes loose in the frame and can be easily removed.
- Peel off the fabric and use the frame as a template for the new board. Draw the outline with a pencil.
- The board is then sawn with a jigsaw. IMPORTANT: The board must be fastened with screw clamps to make sure nothing slips.
- Then it’s time to watch. If there are some faux edges, no problem – they can just be sanded down later.
- The next step is the holes for the pots in the board. So as not to fall off the ships, a small calculation is needed. We show what’s in the video.
- You then draw circles with a compass and then saw them with a jigsaw. But since you can’t go in circles with the jigsaw blade, you have to drill a hole first.
- The wooden board is then sanded so that the unsightly edges disappear. Depending on the condition of the old chair, it should at least be sanded.
- Then it’s time to paint – you can use the so-called “chalk paint” for this. It requires two to three coats of paint and a wax or clear coat seal.
