Ukraine: Russian troops withdraw sporadically

After the withdrawal of Russian troops from the city of Chersonese, the great river Dnieper separates the warring parties. On the Russian-occupied coast, the Ukrainian military is now observing a reduction in forces – and is drawing its own conclusions from this.

According to Ukrainian sources, Russian troops are retreating from the east bank of the Dnieper River in the south of the country. “A decreasing number of Russian troops and military equipment can be seen in the town of Olesky,” the Ukrainian military said in a statement.

Oleski is opposite the city of Kherson, which was recently evacuated by the Russian army. With only Russian reservists now stationed in this area, this would mean that the elite units were withdrawn.

The information could not be independently verified. It is also not yet clear whether Ukrainian troops have already crossed the Dnieper and taken up positions on the eastern side of the river.

The Russian military has repeatedly fired rockets at the city of Kherson in the past few days. Recently, the power failed again in the city, as announced by the regional governor. Power was restored in the city only last week.

The Kherson region is one of four Ukrainian regions that Russia annexed in late September, along with Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine and the West do not recognize it. However, the Russian military has since lost control of most of the region. Last month there was a withdrawal of Russian troops from the city of Cherson.
