About 60 million vaccine doses are to be disposed of from US company Johnson & Johnson. The US FDA announced on Friday that a coronavirus vaccine produced at a controversial production facility in Baltimore may only be partially released.
According to media reports including new York Times, only 10 million doses of the vaccine were issued – “many other loads”, on the other hand, were no longer usable due to potential contamination, and other loads were still being investigated.

The factory in the East Coast metropolis of Baltimore had previously passed from AstraZeneca to competitor Johnson & Johnson. According to media reports, the US government had taken an unusual step to hold Johnson & Johnson responsible because of a production error on the site that had to dispose of millions of vaccine doses. The trigger was reportedly that the ingredients of the two vaccines were mixed.
During a review of a production facility operated by the US biopharmaceutical company Emergent BioSolutions, the FDA discovered several deficiencies. Presently the production is at a standstill. The FDA said Friday that the factory has not yet been released.
