Hollywood director Steven Spielberg (74, “Schindler’s List”, “Saving Private Ryan”) would make several films for Netflix over the next few years. This was announced by his production company Amblin Partners on Monday.
Two years ago, Spielberg criticized streaming providers for indirectly bringing their movies to theaters. Home cinema is getting better and better “but there’s nothing better than going into a dark room with strangers and letting the experience sink in,” he said at the time. The star director was also against Netflix films like “Roma” being nominated for an Oscar.
Now Spielberg seems completely different: He’s looking forward to an “amazing opportunity” to tell new stories with Netflix. Working with Netflix program director Ted Sarandos is personally very important to him, the director said. Sarandos (56) praised Spielberg as a “creative visionary and leader”. He was very much influenced by their stories and memorable characters as he grew up.
Spielberg’s production company has traditionally worked closely with Hollywood studio Universal Pictures. Amblin most recently produced films such as Jurassic World: Dominion, West Side Story, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and 1917.
