It was a scandal at the Oscars in late March: Actor Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock on stage. Now the Academy has decided: Smith will not be allowed to participate in the awards for ten years.

Hollywood star Will Smith has been banned from all Oscar ceremonies for ten years after being slapped in the face at this year’s Oscars. According to the leadership of the Academy in Los Angeles, the actor is not allowed to attend any other Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events during this time.

Hit comedian Chris Rock, 53, took to the stage at the Oscars in late March after joking about Smith’s hair loss wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The scandal affected the awards ceremony, where Smith was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in the film “King Richard”.

As a result, Smith resigned from the Oscars last week, describing his behavior as “shocking, painful and unforgivable.” Thus the star of films such as “Independence Day”, “Men in Black” and “Bad Boys” foreshadowed possible expulsion from the Academy or suspension of his membership.

The Academy Board of Directors has now met to decide on the penalty against Smith. After the slap, there were also calls to take back Smith’s Oscar. Such harsh punishment was considered almost impossible.
