Derek Cook Jr. first played football at Fort Washington High School and did not enter basketball until college. There he helped Wyoming to the first participation in the university’s history in the NCAA Tournament with an average of eight points and six rebounds in his senior year.
Cook made his first professional move in Greece, but then quickly moved to the NBA G-League. This was followed by positions in Australia and Canada, among other places. Center returned to Europe again for the 2019/2020 season, in which he joined Italian First Division club Trieste.

Most recently, Cook had a contract with Tsmoki-Minsk. There he played in three competitions. In the Belarusian Premier League he averaged eight points and five rebounds for the title. He averaged eight points and eight rebounds in the VTB United League. Although he played only one game in the Basketball Champions League, he consolidated 19 points and received nine rebounds.
