They were considered the forerunners of the smartphone era and initially shaped the world of business people in particular – with most Blackberry models having stopped working as of Tuesday. The Canadian company recently decided not to provide any further updates to its own OS operating system and thus actually sealed the end of many older models of phones with special small keypads.

In early December, the BlackBerry website said that the services “will no longer be available as of January 4, 2022” for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, for BlackBerry 10 software, and for BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions. As of this date, all devices equipped with these services and software versions no longer work reliably, the manufacturer warned.

This applies to data as well as calls, SMS and emergency calls. BlackBerry said that devices using the Google Android system are not affected by the changes.

The Canadian manufacturer found immense success in business and politics, especially in the late 2000s. With the built-in keyboard, writing long texts seemed easier, but the manufacturer soon encountered the rapid rise of smartphones with touch functionality, especially Apple’s iPhones, and missed connections. The company is now focusing on software development.
