For the first time since 1986, Canada has Our official second team in Qatar – Again in a football world cup. While Canadians dominate ice hockey, their national sport, and were practically born with skates on their feet, soccer isn’t as popular in the True North. That’s why we’re here to present you Canadian fans with a short football crash course.

Soccer shirts are short sleeved. In every normal World Cup, thick fabric and long-sleeved hockey jerseys would be a taboo – especially for those tried and tested in the cold, such as the Canadians. But with the World Cup taking place in Qatar and therefore being postponed until November and December, long-sleeved tees can be a smart choice for the one time you’re seen in public at home.

It is important to have the right planning for a soccer game. “I won’t go to the toilet until the second break” doesn’t work because there is only one break (after 45 minutes). Use them to do whatever needs to be done.

Kicked goals do not count in ice hockey, with only minor distractions allowed with the skate. In football both are possible. But if you want to be on the safe side, you better kick the ball properly.

Just accept the referee’s decision? Not in football. It is important to send a signal after each whistle and attack the referee with at least three players. The so-called pack formation is part of good form.

Finally, there’s one more thing in common: fans of both sports can look forward to big crates that get disallowed a little later due to a millimeter offside decision (even though the rules are slightly different).
