Germany winner Canada follows Australia in final

Germany-winners Canada have reached the traditional Davis Cup final and are aiming for a maiden title in the national tennis tournament. Two days after defeating the German team, Canada also defeated Italy 2–1 in the semi-finals. In Sunday’s final (1pm), the North Americans will meet 28-time winners Australia.

The doubles Felix Auger-Aliassime/Vasek Pospisil secured a deciding point against Matteo Berretini/Fabio Fognini with 7:6 (7:2), 7:5.

Earlier, Lorenzo Sonego had put the Italian ahead 7:6 (7:5), 6:7 (5:7), 6:4 against Denis Shapovalov. World No. 6 Ogre-Aliassime began the turnaround with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lorenzo Musetti.

Final rivals Australia beat Croatia in a thrilling encounter on Friday evening. In doubles, Max Purcell/Jordan Thompson advanced to the final against world-class pair Nikola Mektic/Mate Pavic with 6:7 (3:7), 7:5, 6:4. This gave Australia its first Davis Cup title since 2003.

Without top player Alexander Zverev, the German team lost to Canada on Thursday and missed a second straight Davis Cup semi-final. The last German victory was 29 years earlier.
