Hinterman wins just as Canada stuns Cameron Alexander

Starting at number 17, Niels Hintermann sensationally worked his way to his first World Cup win in the downhill. The Zurich native wins at the same time as Canada’s Cameron Alexander ahead of Austria’s Mathias Meyer and the beat fuses in fourth. Marco Odermatt finished 15th.

Five years after his sensational victory in combination at Wengen, Niels Hintermann won his second World Cup race in Quetzfjell. Together with Canada’s surprise driver Cameron Alexander (car number 39), the Zurich man took the top trio of Mathias Meyer, Beat Fuse and Alexander Kilde in 3, 4 and 5 within 24 hours.

Hinterman, who had already impressed in training sessions, was twelve hundredths faster than Meyer on the less selective 1994 Olympic course. Fuse, third, was 19 hundredth short of Bill Johnson, Olympic downhill champion in 1984, being the first rider to win the first downhill since the Winter Games.

For a long time it looked like the Fuze would be leading the discipline classification with their sixth podium this winter. Due to the surprising progress of Canadian Cameron Alexander, Fuse missed the podium, which is why Alexander Aamodt Kilde kept the red jersey.

Marco Odermatt finishes in 15th place as the third best Swiss. His lead over Kilde in the overall World Cup is still comfortable. Stephen Rosentin finished 17th.
