Leaks reveal bigger camera bump and better features

Microsoft’s smartphone with double display was not yet a hit in its first version. Now the first pictures of the alleged successor have surfaced.

Microsoft’s Surface Duo is one such device that divides minds. In our big exam at the beginning of the year We were both impressed and irritated. The camera, equipment and software could not keep pace with the stylish design and fine workmanship of the folding phone. In the end, a tool was left that simply could not develop its potential.

Maybe the second generation will do better. Leaked pictures of the alleged Surface Duo 2 have now surfaced – in a YouTube video. Its origin is not known, but it is As Windows Central writes, the devices shown are called two “nearly final prototypes”. The portal wants to confirm this.

The most noticeable change compared to its predecessor is the larger camera hump at the back of the device. While the Surface Duo was still extremely thin and – if that’s possible for a folding phone – imperceptible, the camera hump on the Surface Duo 2 is reminiscent of normal smartphones. According to leaks, it has three cameras. In addition, the fingerprint reader was removed and possibly integrated into the power button. The USB-C port is now in the middle on the right side of the device. Overall, Microsoft continues to rely on two separate, hinge-connected screens.

Apparently Microsoft wants to answer one of the biggest criticisms of its first foldable. The Surface Duo camera was integrated into the frame on the inside and the quality was almost on par with an average selfie camera. This should change with the new camera system, but at the expense of design. In the forums on US technology pages, there is already heated discussion about whether the camera hump is really an asset or as a result the device loses its appeal.

Microsoft should also improve the rest of the devices with the Surface Duo 2. As Windows Central writes, an existing Snapdragon 888 processor must be installed, and the device should also support 5G and NFC. Overall, the technology should be in line with current smartphones. The equipment of the predecessor, on the other hand, already looked outdated at the time of launch. Surface Duo 2 should be delivered by the latest October – but, like its predecessor, probably only in the USA for the time being. It shouldn’t appear in Germany until early next year.
