Own fast-charging station frustrates even VW bosses

Co-founded first, then vicious blasphemy: VW boss Herbert Diess has once again publicly spoken out about fast-charging station operator Ionity’s proposal. The case once again shows that there is still a lot of work to do in expanding the charging infrastructure in Europe.

VW Boss actually charges while driving on burner

Ionity was founded in 2017 by BMW, Daimler, Ford and the Volkswagen Group and, by combining efforts, intended to decisively advance the construction of fast charging stations along European motorways. Over the years, however, there has always been strong criticism even from our own ranks. Now it’s VW boss Herbert Diess once again, who in a public post on LinkedIn strongly comments on the experience with the provider that his group helped establish.
VW boss shares this impression of his charging experience with Ionity

“Even after last year’s criticism: no toilet, no coffee, a column out of order/faulty, sad case. It’s anything but a premium charging experience, Ionity!”, says Dias in his post. Accordingly, they recently started the trip from Lake Constance to Lake Garda with their VW ID.3, but found very few charging points on Brenner – Ionity only operates 4 locations here. Attractive loading areas, for example with shopping opportunities, are certainly quickly occupied, but the options are not very inviting. Along with a picture of his stop, Dioss provides an effect that shows that the charging points are currently often not keeping up with the average petrol stations.

Short answer from Ionity

To repeated public criticism, Marcus Groll, managing director and COO of Ionity, politely responded to the VW boss’s post. “Thank you very much for the response. The Brenner location is on our list of upgrade sites. This summer we saw a sharp increase in engagement in several locations, especially in Norway, Sweden and France, and we will respond,” Said growl. In a specific location, which Dias sharply criticized, they are working on “improving customer service.”
