Swiss women have no chance against Canada. Sports in the country / abroad

Women’s World Cup – The Swiss women’s national ice hockey team emerged victorious in their third appearance at the World Cup in Calgary. Switzerland suffered a 5–0 loss against hosts and favorites Canada.

The Swiss women can expect third against the top favourites. Thanks to goalkeeper Andrea Brandli, Switzerland had all the chances with a 0–0 start at the start of the middle third. The 24-year-old, who went abroad for Ohio State University, intercepted 21 shots in the opening third. However, a pleasant start from the Swiss team did not disappoint the hosts. Like the first two matches, in which Canada also failed to score in the opening third, the dam broke in the second twenty minutes.

Team Canada went from 0:0 to 3:0 in the 30th minute, and the favorites also fought through the final third with a four-goal reserve. Canada’s coach Troy Ryan said after the game, “Of course we would like to start well. But the energy we use in the first period will benefit us later.” Only through a goalkeeper change at the start of the final third when the score was 0:5 – Saskia Maurer came in for Brandley – Switzerland were able to stop Canada’s offensive Furioso. Even though Switzerland were goalless in their seventh duel with Canada, 0:5 is the closest result so far against the big favourites.

Without top scorer Alina Müller, who injured her knee in the game against Russia, Switzerland remained unremarkable on the offensive. Statisticians tried to count shots on goal in favor of the Canadians until the end of the game. The Swiss team did not even know how to take advantage of penalties from their opponents. Groundbreaking 0:1 fell during a power play for Switzerland.

The fact that the Swiss women are still without a point after three appearances and before the final group game on Thursday against the 2019 World Cup runners-up Finns, doesn’t have to worry them. As one of the top five teams, they are sure to make it to the quarter-finals.
