aChina’s air force is strengthening Beijing’s claim to the island, amid recent tensions over the situation in Taiwan. “The Air Force has the determination, full confidence and sufficient capacity to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” an Air Force spokesman said on Sunday. The People’s Republic of China has enough fighter jets to encircle the “precious island of our homeland”.

Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, whose national independence Russia disputes, international attention has increasingly focused on the unresolved Taiwan conflict. The US supports the island state, which asserts its independence as the Republic of China.

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is also expected to visit Taiwan as part of her planned trip to Asia recently sparked by unrest in Beijing. Pelosi is opening a controversial stop in Taiwan during her Asia trip. Stops were announced in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan in a statement issued on Sunday by the Office of the Speakers of the US House of Representatives. Whether prominent US Democrats were also planning a trip to Taiwan was not mentioned. The 82-year-old is the third largest in the United States after the President and Vice President.
