Italian Camilla Giorgi, 29, is in top form at the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal.
The world number 71 goes to the semifinals against Coco Gauff (pictured) with 6:4 and 7:6(2) in the hard court event that concluded with $1.84 million. In addition to tournament number 15, Giorgi knocked out Mertens (BEL-9) in Round 1 and Kvitova (CZE-7) in Round 3.
In the semifinals, the Italian meets Jessica Pegula, an unseeded American, who also surprises Canada. Pegula prevails in the quarter-finals against Ons Jabur (Tune-13) with 1:6, 7:6(4) and 6:0.
The second semi-final will be up against top-ranked Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and fourth-placed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the second Test for the US Open.
