1:4 defeat against very strong Canada

Women’s World Cup – The Swiss women’s national team suffered their first defeat in the second game at the World Cup in Herning, Denmark. Coach Colin Mueller’s team lost 4–1 to Canada.

The day after the 3-1 win against Japan, as expected, the Canadians were very strong. But the Swiss women did well in the long run against a heavier opponent, at least in terms of results.

At half-time, Switzerland was only 0:1 behind Canada’s side, despite a clear shooting gap, which ended in 46:8. Then, within 92 seconds, the world champion and Olympic champion cleared the scoreboard with a double strike. Seven and a half minutes before the end, Alina Marti reduced the deficit to 1:3. Canada responded with a fourth goal with a good minute before the end.

The Swiss are also clear outsiders in their next game. On Monday evening they meet from USA. Despite the results of the remaining two preliminary round games, Switzerland need not worry about qualifying for the quarter-finals. The teams with the strongest countries in Group A qualify for the first knockout round.
