200m gold goes to Canada: Andre de Grasse is Olympic champion for the first time

Canadian sprinter Andre de Grasse won his first Olympic Games gold medal and succeeded Usain Bolt, the superstar over 200m. The 26-year-old crossed the finish line in Tokyo on Wednesday with a national record of 19.62 seconds. He then spoke to his family in the interior of the Olympic Stadium, which were connected by a screen. “In the end, I won,” said de Grasse with a smile.

Silver went to Kenneth Bednarek in 19.68 seconds from world champion Noah Lyles (19.74 / both USA). American Ariane Nighathon (17) was the youngest participant in the final in Olympic history, losing the medal in the half-round of the stadium in 19.93 seconds in fourth place.

German champion Steven Müller (LG Friedberg-Fauerbach) was eliminated in the opening race. Over the 100 metres, Italian Lamont Marcel Jacobs was the surprise winner, replacing Jamaican world record holder Bolt, who had won the gold medal three times in Rio de Janeiro five years earlier.
