Ship loses 90 containers in the Pacific - along with dangerous goods

Dozens of containers fell from a freighter into the sea during the storm. Some of these had lithium-ion batteries. These are marked as dangerous goods.

A ship operated by Danish shipping company Maersk has lost nearly 90 containers to bad weather conditions in the North Pacific. Nine of them were containers marked as dangerous goods and contained lithium-ion batteries, Maersk announced Friday. About 100 other containers were damaged.

The incident happened on Monday aboard the Liberian-flagged Dyros as the ship was en route from Yantian in China to the US west coast metropolis of Seattle. No one got injured.

Maersk, along with MSC, is one of the largest container shipping companies in the world by far. The German shipping company Hamburg Süd also belongs to the Maersk Group. It happens time and again that container ships lose cargo. Last year, “Maersk Essen” lost 727 containers and “Maersk Eindhoven” lost 235 more containers, as reported by the Ritzau news agency.
