Airbus justifies the end of premium aerotech with billions in losses

  • Aircraft manufacturer’s daughter has been collecting losses for 12 years
  • regions should become more competitive
  • Employees also affected in Bremen

Airbus has defended its plan to liquidate its subsidiary Premium Aerotec. Michael Scholhorn, Airbus operations director for Augsburger Allgemeine, said the subsidiary has been making losses for twelve years.

According to Schöllhorn, the loss of Premium Aerotec will be in the billions. The group can no longer afford it. Because Airbus is currently investing heavily, for example in environmentally friendly engines. At the same time, the sale of aircraft has come to a standstill. Schöllhorn defended its intention to sell parts of Premium Aerotec to an investor. This could make these sectors more competitive. Production facilities in Augsburg and Verel are for sale. In Varel alone, Premium Aerotec employs 1,300 people.

Aerotech workers in Bremen are also affected

Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stefan Weil (SPD) and his Bavarian counterpart Markus Söder (CSU) recently criticized the plans. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) should stop Airbus from outsourcing her daughter, he demanded. Airbus also wants to close other premium aerotech locations in Nordenham, Bremen and Hamburg. Here, however, is to return the output to the group.
