Improved path tracer and impressive performance

From thilo bear ,
As expected, Epic Games has announced the completion of Unreal Engine 5. The powerful game engine is thus escaping the preview status and the developers have the ultimate tools at their disposal. There is not only an engine download to celebrate the day, but also a game and city from the Matrix Awakens demo.

As part of the show “State of Unreal”, Epic Games made the explicit announcement. Less than a year after the launch of Early Access for Unreal Engine 5, the final version of the Epic Engine can be downloaded for the time being. With this release, the goal is to enable teams large and small to create next-generation content. According to Epic UE5 enables “next generation, real-time 3D content and experiences with more freedom, accuracy and flexibility than ever before”. Even before version 1.0 of UE5, Epic had a collaboration with CDPR. Unreal Engine 5. New The Witcher game based on declare.

UE5: Lumen and Nanite

The press release reiterates the importance of the core elements of the UE5 module. Lumen is the UE5’s global illumination. It can be completely dynamic, i.e. actually indirect light and calculates its rebound in real time. By default, it runs with software or without additional RT hardware, but if the latter is available, it is also used. Lumens include the skylight (i.e. the mostly blue light that illuminates everything) and, if desired, all other light sources including the light-emitting texture (the lighting functions, i.e. the projection of a texture like a slide projector, but only directional Works with illumination Lumens) and also masters RT reflections.

Nanite is the new geometry engine in the UE5. It always tries to draw one polygon per pixel for a high-resolution model, if possible (and if that makes sense). This is convenient for developers because they can theoretically ignore some task steps such as manually creating LODs; UE5 now does this in real time. Basically, Nanite downsamples a high-poly model in real time with a pretty decent auto-LOD.

UE5: TSR, VSM and more

Also important are virtual shadow maps, which are specifically designed to work with Lumen and Nanite, offering soft shadows with controllable performance losses. UE5’s new temporal anti-aliasing is called Temporal Super Resolution (TSR), which doesn’t offer AI support, but is a good base. Compared to TAA Upsampling (TAAU) of UE4 (also supported by UE5), TSR works much better and was also used in the Matrix Awakens demo.
