A baby boy was born in Israel at the beginning of the month, who had to undergo a fetal operation shortly after birth. The operation was successful and the girl is fine. Attending physicians say it was a fetus-in-fetal event.
Presumably, the pregnancy started as a twin pregnancy.
Doctors at the Asuta Medical Center in the Israeli coastal city of Ashdod had identified some in an already healthy fetus from ultrasound images taken late in pregnancy. Further examinations revealed that it was probably the fetus of a twin, which had hardly developed and had been incorporated into a truly healthy fetus early in the pregnancy. This is why embryo-in-fetus is also known as fetal inclusion in the German-speaking world. An event that occurs only once in every 500,000 pregnancies.
Everything went without complications in the current case in Israel, the mother and daughter were even discharged from the hospital.
