Kathy Hochul takes over as governor of New York after Andrew Cuomo scandal

The scandal after the resignation of the governor of New York Andrew Cuomo His successor, Kathy Hochul, is now in charge of state affairs. The 62-year-old is the first woman to hold political leadership of a significant region with nearly 20 million residents and the US East Coast metropolis of the same name.

Hochul represents the more conservative wing of Democrats in New York and has been Cuomo’s deputy since 2015, in his third term in office. He promised greater transparency and a better working environment in the highest government circles as compared to the times of his predecessor. Hochul plans to run for a full term in 2022.

Cuomo two weeks ago resignation announcement and thus anticipated the impending impeachment proceedings. Several women accused him of sexual harassment. The mood surrounding Cuomos was described in one report as “hostile” for women and an “atmosphere of fear”. US President Joe Biden also demanded his resignation.

In a farewell speech on Monday, fallen Democratic hopes described the scandal as “not fair”. There were “moments of intense political pressure and media hype”, which led to a quick decision. Cuomo clearly does not see his guilt, despite the testimony of several women: “The allegations still have to be investigated and confirmed, whether by a woman or a man,” he said.
