Police shot the fugitive while chasing the car

Investigators were following a smuggler’s truck near Nice. Bullets were fired. An Egyptian in the van was seriously injured.

During a chase near Nice, French police shot at a van carrying refugees and seriously injured an Egyptian with a shot in the head. The public prosecutor in Nice said the smuggler, who was driving, suddenly accelerated his refrigerated truck over a barrier on Wednesday night and ran towards an officer standing at the door of a police car. The officer then fired four shots at the car, which still started to roar.

On the outskirts of Nice, the smugglers fled with two people sitting next to them. Inside the refrigerator, police discovered five refugees, including 35-year-old Egyptian.

French investigators initially received information from the Italian border police that the van had entered the country. In the village of Sospel, an attempt to stop a car ignoring stop signs failed. After a 30-kilometer chase on winding mountain roads in the interior of the Cte d’Azur, cars were fired upon in Cantreón. According to prosecutor Javier Bonholm, two investigations were launched – one against the smuggler and the other against the police officer. It should be clarified whether the officer acted in self-defense.
