Marvel fans across Canada are expected to return to theatres in large numbers this weekend as Spider-Man: Brand New Day makes its theatrical debut. Following the remarkable success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, industry forecasts point to another solid opening, although the latest installment faces a more competitive market and different audience expectations than its predecessor.
Box Office Forecast Signals a Strong Opening
Cinema advertising company Pearl & Dean has projected that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will earn between £40 million and £55 million during its opening weekend across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
While the forecast applies specifically to those markets, the film is also expected to perform strongly in Canada, where Marvel releases have traditionally attracted large audiences in major centres such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal and Calgary. Canadian cinemas continue to see strong attendance for high-profile franchise releases, particularly during the summer movie season.
Spider-Man Franchise Continues to Build Momentum
The latest chapter in Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ rebooted Spider-Man series arrives after the extraordinary performance of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned £97.3 million in the U.K. and Ireland in 2021. That film became the highest-grossing superhero release in those markets and the fourth highest-grossing film overall, trailing only Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Skyfall and No Time To Die.
Interest in the new film has been fuelled by an exceptionally successful marketing campaign. The first two trailers reportedly generated approximately one billion and 600 million views respectively, outperforming other highly anticipated releases, including Grand Theft Auto VI and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Marvel Connections Could Strengthen Audience Interest
Another factor supporting the film’s release is the growing anticipation surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next major crossover, Avengers: Doomsday. Although Spider-Man has not officially been confirmed for that project, Brand New Day expands his connection to the wider MCU.
The film features appearances by Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, alongside Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal. Their inclusion is expected to resonate with longtime Marvel fans.
Leading actors Tom Holland and Zendaya also remain a major draw beyond superhero audiences. The pair recently appeared together in The Odyssey, which delivered the biggest opening week of director Christopher Nolan’s career with £23.4 million at the U.K. box office. Zendaya has also enjoyed continued success through The Drama, which earned £10.2 million, along with her acclaimed television role in Euphoria.
Why Matching No Way Home May Be Difficult
Missing Nostalgia Factor
Despite strong momentum, industry observers suggest several factors could prevent Brand New Day from reaching the same record-breaking heights as No Way Home.
One significant difference is the absence of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, whose appearances in the previous film created a rare multigenerational crossover that attracted longtime Spider-Man fans alongside newer audiences.
Increased Competition at Theatres
Release timing also presents a challenge. Unlike No Way Home, which benefited from the holiday movie season and relatively limited competition, Brand New Day enters cinemas during a crowded summer schedule.
It will compete with established releases such as The Odyssey, which is expected to continue dominating premium large-format screens, as well as the family-focused Toy Story 5. In contrast, the principal competitors during No Way Home‘s theatrical run—including West Side Story (£7.8 million), The Matrix Resurrections (£7.6 million) and The King’s Man (£8 million)—delivered comparatively modest box office performances.
Marvel Faces a Different Market Than in 2021
The Marvel brand also enters this release in a different position than it did several years ago. Since No Way Home, the studio has experienced more inconsistent theatrical results.
The Marvels earned £7.2 million in the U.K. and Ireland, becoming Marvel Studios’ first clear box office disappointment. None of the studio’s releases last year surpassed £25 million, with Fantastic Four: First Steps finishing as the strongest performer at £23.9 million.
However, Marvel’s biggest characters continue to demonstrate strong commercial appeal. Deadpool & Wolverine generated £57.8 million, becoming the studio’s fourth-highest-performing film in the market despite carrying a restrictive 15 age rating.
Outlook for Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Current projections place Spider-Man: Brand New Day comfortably ahead of the earlier Tom Holland entries, Spider-Man: Homecoming (£30.8 million) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (£37.4 million), while remaining below the exceptional benchmark established by No Way Home.
If audience response proves positive, the film could maintain strong attendance throughout the remainder of the summer, including in Canadian theatres where blockbuster superhero releases continue to attract significant interest. Its combination of established characters, recognizable stars and connections to the broader Marvel universe positions it as one of the season’s most closely watched theatrical releases.
