Theater in the digital space: Alienation has premiered

Linz. With “Alienation”, the youth theater division of the Landtheater brings a play about the feeling of not conforming to an ideal and the longing for a place where one can feel at home. However, the game is not played on the famous wooden boards, but live over the internet. The play, based on an unpublished novel by Corinna Entelmann, was conceived as a purely online format with the possibility of dialogue. Premiere: January 17th.

Utopia and reality, digitality and everyday life, one’s own needs and the expectations of others – Corinna Entelman’s text speaks of the feeling of not conforming to an ideal and the longing for a place where one can feel at home. Isolation is about a lot: growing up, gender norms, the blessings and dangers of the internet, and ultimately just what a young man wants in search of himself.

The template for Entelmann’s piece is about Nicola or Nico (played live by Isabella Campestrini), “It is about a girl who tries to find herself, cannot find a place, with role models.” She can’t find her way, is looking for something and always encounters resistance bumps. On the Internet, she invents a world in which she can be whatever she wants,” says Nelle Netzke, head of the Young Theater Division. who also directs. The pandemic sparked the idea of editing the novel in such a way that it would actually premiere on the Internet.

“We have won a stage for this”

“This is not a production for the wooden stage, but really specifically for the digital space. We keep trying to research what is still possible in this room, how these formats can be And how can we work with them – to move from cinematic experience to interactivity,” says Nietzke, who thanks Entelmann for this, for his novel dealing with it in this way. “Beyond the pandemic, these are the formats that we will continue with, we have gained a stage.”

The authors themselves are also pleased, “I’m grateful for this version, it’s great to be able to see it online now, which further adds to the girl’s loneliness,” says Entelmann, who thinks this topic is especially important for such great for people. One form fits into the staging.

FH students develop a virtual world

The play is also part of the European Project PlayOn, which deals with the digitization of theater for young audiences. Two students Nils Gallist and Manuel Leutner developed and programmed the virtual world for drama in collaboration with the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences, Heisenberg Location.

Despite this, the piece takes place in a renovated attic “in which various people have left their mark. You can find little things in every corner,” says outfitter Karin Waltenberger.

In addition to a live camera image, the recorded mobile phone video captures the environment of the protagonist, an ongoing chat. “It makes sense to watch with a smartphone in class on a PC monitor, or on a beamer, with a smartphone you reach your limit,” he advises.

the audience decides

Through a web app, viewers can also help determine which direction the virtual world should develop. Feedbacks can also be sent. For example, follow-up talks are offered for school classes.
