Wordle is all about guessing words. Or rather: a word every day. Because that’s all there is to the original version of Wordle. At the beginning, the player receives 5 gray boxes that must be filled with an English word. The game then indicates whether the letter:

• occurs in the searched word and occurs in the correct position (green),
• occurs in the word but is not yet in the correct place (yellow), or
• Doesn’t appear in the word at all (gray).

You now have 6 attempts to find the word of the day. There is no second attempt or new words – only the next day.

Some players immediately notice the similarity of the logic game “Mastermind”, which works on a similar principle. A certain color sequence should be detected by successive guesses. It was one of the most popular sports in the world in the 1970s.

Wordle was invented by Josh Wardle during the lockdown in 2020. It was originally planned as a gift for his partner and was initially only played by the two of them. Wardle’s partner then gave a list of 2500 English words that could be typed into the game. However, there are still some Wordle alternatives available as apps. As a rule, you can play as many puzzles as you want at once and not all apps are chargeable. But the original Wordle version is a browser game.
