New trend of theft in America: Amazon freight trains targeted by thieves

shifts – It looks like a pile of garbage. Torn packages and discarded merchandise from Amazon and other retailers line the Los Angeles, U.S., railroad track.

According to the AP, California is grappling with incidents of burglary and theft. New in the eyes of thieves: freight trains that are robbed on the move.

For months, cargo containers on trains bound for downtown Los Angeles have been bolt-cut, searched and looted. Thieves simply throw what is not needed near the tracks.

A CBSLA television crew filmed a burglar fleeing the area with several packages on a section of a Union Pacific track.

Back in November, thousands of abandoned boxes were counted along tracks lined by homeless camps to the northeast of the city in the Lincoln Park area.

Railroad company Union Pacific expressed concern in a statement about rising levels of theft of goods in California. It said the number of surveillance patrols has been increased.
