Twelve South Launches Compact AirFly Drive Wireless CarPlay Adapter

Twelve South has expanded its AirFly accessory lineup with the launch of AirFly Drive, a compact adapter designed to bring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity to vehicles that normally require a wired connection.

The new device is aimed at drivers who want to use their vehicle’s existing infotainment system without plugging in their smartphone each time they get behind the wheel. Twelve South says AirFly Drive supports a wide range of vehicles equipped with factory-installed wired CarPlay.

AirFly Drive Converts Wired CarPlay to Wireless

AirFly Drive plugs directly into a vehicle’s USB port and acts as a wireless bridge between the infotainment system and a smartphone.

According to Twelve South, the adapter works with most vehicles offering factory-wired CarPlay, covering more than 75 vehicle makes and model years dating back to 2014. A detailed vehicle compatibility list has also been published to help drivers determine whether their model is supported.

The device features a USB-A connector, while a USB-C adapter is included for vehicles equipped with newer USB ports. Its small aluminum housing is designed to remain connected inside the vehicle rather than being removed after each trip.

No App or Account Required

Setup is designed to be straightforward. AirFly Drive does not require drivers to install an additional app, create an account or separately charge the adapter.

Users plug the device into their vehicle’s USB connection and pair their smartphone during the initial setup. After that, AirFly Drive is designed to reconnect automatically whenever the vehicle starts, allowing CarPlay to operate wirelessly.

This could be particularly convenient for Canadian drivers making shorter daily trips, where repeatedly connecting and disconnecting a cable can be cumbersome.

The adapter can also store connections for two smartphones. A physical button on the device allows drivers to switch between the paired phones with a single press.

Supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Although the AirFly Drive name may be particularly familiar to users of Apple accessories, the new adapter is not limited to iPhones. Twelve South says it also supports wireless Android Auto for compatible Android devices.

The adapter continues to use the vehicle’s built-in display and existing controls, including dashboard buttons and steering-wheel controls. This means drivers do not need to replace their vehicle’s infotainment hardware to gain wireless connectivity.

Key features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic reconnection when the vehicle starts, one-button switching between two paired phones and compatibility with both USB-A and USB-C connections.

Twelve South also says the product will receive ongoing compatibility updates.

Designed for Older Vehicles With Wired Smartphone Integration

Wireless CarPlay has become increasingly common in newer vehicles, but many cars still rely on a wired USB connection even when their infotainment systems support Apple CarPlay.

Adapters such as AirFly Drive offer another option for owners who want wireless functionality without replacing the factory-installed head unit.

For drivers, the main advantage is convenience. Once paired, a phone can remain in a pocket, bag or wireless charging cradle while CarPlay connects automatically when the vehicle starts.

AirFly Drive Priced at $39.99

Twelve South launched AirFly Drive at a listed price of $39.99, with black and white versions available.

Canadian buyers should confirm local pricing, retailer availability and vehicle compatibility before purchasing, as pricing and availability may differ from the U.S. launch.

With support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a compact plug-in design and no requirement for a separate app or account, AirFly Drive offers a relatively simple way to add wireless smartphone connectivity to compatible vehicles that currently depend on a cable.
