In just five games, Patrick Fischer has to figure out who is a good fit for the Olympic ice hockey tournament. He is breaking new ground and nominating two different national teams for Test matches in November and December with a total of 44 players.

There are only two test options before the Olympic hockey tournament: the Germany Cup with games against Slovakia, Germany and Russia (November 11 to 14) in Krefeld and the winner from the tournament and encounter in Visp with games against Latvia (Russia-Slovakia). December 16-17).

Patrick Fischer will travel to Krefeld and Wisp with two completely different teams. He adds: “We don’t offer a player twice.” Not even a goalkeeper? «No, not even the goalkeeper. We’re competing with two different goalscorers in Wisp than in Krefeld.”

This means: 44 players from the National League get a chance to be recommended for the Olympic hockey tournament. 22 in Krefeld, 22 in Wisp. So in preparation for the Olympics, there are no A and B teams, but two teams of almost equal strength. The differences will be small. Patrick Fischer says: “In the Deutschland Cup we will call more experienced defenders.”

Ten current NHL professionals – Roman Josie, Nico Hisier, Timo Meier, Pius Sutter, Gregory Hoffman, Kevin Fiala, Philip Kurashev, Dean Cooken, Jonas Seigenthaler and Nino Niedreiters – are already provisionally drawn to Beijing. Meanwhile, it is also clear that if players are used in the form team (AHL), they will also be released for the Olympic tournament. It should impress Sven Bartschi, Janice Moser, Tim Burney and Tobias Geisser.

So half of the Olympic team will consist of professionals who are committed to North America. It is expected that about 10 of the 44 players called for Krefeld and Wisp will buy tickets to Beijing. Switzerland will play against Russia (February 9), Czech Republic (February 11) and Denmark (February 12) in the group games.

Anyone who wants to go to Beijing will have to get vaccinated. Patrick Fischer is not currently vaccinated. This season it is possible to participate in major events (U20 World Cup, World Cup, Olympics) with full vaccination. Patrick Fischer is aware of this situation. “I will be fully vaccinated after my departure for the U20 World Cup in Canada.” The Swiss will fly to Canada on 12 December. The World Cup is starting from 25th December. Patrick Fischer is at the U20 World Cup as an observer.
